Prescriptionist Programme

Growing numbers and increasingly advanced pharmaceuticals have changed the professional role of the prescriptionist in recent years.

The prescriptionist programme provides you with extensive knowledge in chemistry, physiology, pharmacology and pharmaceutics, which is required to understand how pharmaceuticals act in the body.

The prescriptionist programme is arranged in cooperation between the Sahlgrenska Academy and the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Gothenburg.

The prescriptionist programme in Gothenburg is a modern professional programme with pharmaceuticals and information on pharmaceuticals in focus. It is a three-year programme comprising 180 higher education credits that lead to the degree as a graduate prescriptionist, which is a professional qualification, and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. There is also an opportunity to continue at the master's level, which is required to qualify for doctoral studies.

Prescriptionists work at pharmacies as well as the pharmaceutical industry, at authorities and bioscience research laboratories. Areas that are partially new to prescriptionists are self care and preventive healthcare.

The prescriptionist programme comprises six main blocks. The programme includes courses in chemistry, cell biology, integrative biomedicine, pharmaceutics and social pharmaceutics as well as on-the-job training.

Extensive range of courses offered

The introductory course provides an overall view of the opportunities that choosing the profession of a prescriptionist has to offer and of the prescriptionist's role in the chain of care. The professional role builds extensively on searching for, assimilating and conveying information on pharmaceuticals. Interpretation of scientific research, biostatistics, mathematics, information searches and the ability to present and convey information are therefore key elements of the introductory course.

The course Pharmaceutical advice and communication ties back into this later in the programme. The first year is otherwise primarily devoted to basic knowledge in chemistry and cell biology, which is of major importance to how a pharmaceutical works in the body.

Integrative biomedicine encompasses several different courses and extends over one and a half semester. Knowledge is initially provided about the anatomy of the human body, the physiological processes and the regulation and coordination of the entire organism. This forms the basis of pharmacology where the active mechanisms of the pharmaceuticals are studied. The block also covers basic pathology, medical microbiology and tumour biology.

In semester four, the origins, structure, manufacture and toxicology of pharmaceuticals are studied, as well as the use of pharmaceuticals from a social perspective. The fifth semester addresses European pharmaceutical legislation and pharmacokinetics, which describe how pharmaceuticals are taken up, distributed, metabolised and secreted from the body.

The programme is concluded with an opportunity for specialisation in the form of optional courses in topics such as clinical trials, pharmaceutical production and veterinary pharmaceuticals. The theoretical knowledge is converted into practice through a degree project and pharmacy work placement.

Application, entrance requirements and selection

Admission to the prescriptionist programme takes place in the autumn semester. This programme is conducted in Swedish.

To meet the general entry requirements you must:

  • have successfully completed upper secondary (high school) education and meet the requirements for university studies in the home country.
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in English. The entry requirement is the equivalent of at least grade E of the Swedish upper secondary course English 6/English B. See English Language Requirements.
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in Swedish. The entry requirement is the equivalent of at least grade E of the Swedish upper secondary course Swedish 3/Swedish as a second language 3.

For students who received their final school grades after 31 December 2009, there is an additional entry requirement for mathematics as follows:

  • The student must have successfully completed courses in mathematics to reach the level of the Swedish courses Mathematics 1a, 1b or 1c / Mathematics A (approximately 10 years of mathematics studies).

If you have an International Baccalaureate (IB) degree from 2013 or earlier and received a diploma you have basic eligibility for higher education in Sweden, if you have sufficient knowledge in Swedish, English and mathematics.

For general admission, you must have:

  • Swedish A1 or A2, at least grade 4. If you completed your secondary education prior to January 1, 2010, it is enough with grades of at least 4 in Swedish B.
  • English B, SL, at least grade 4, with language of instruction other than English
  • Whoever has the IB diploma meet normal requirements in mathematics for basic eligibility, otherwise required Mathematics course A or Mathematics 1a/1b/1c.

And specific entry requirements, with pass grades of at least E:

  • Biology B, Physics A, Chemistry B, Mathematics D or Biology 2, Physics 1a/1b1+1b2, Chemistry 2, Mathematics 4 (field-specific entry requirements 11/A11).

Selection: grades (66%) and the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (34%).
