Programme in Audiology

An audiologist is an expert in the significance of hearing and communication to social interaction. The work involves finding solutions to hearing problems based on the needs of the individual. The Bachelor of Science in Audiology requires three years of full-time study. After that, the studies can lead to a Master of Science as well as the additional option of applying for a research program.

The science of hearing

As the population is ageing, more and more people are experiencing trouble with their hearing. Today, it is estimated that more than a million people in Sweden have a hearing impairment. Younger people are also affected due to noise at their workplace or during leisure time. It is believed that hearing problems will continue to increase and become one of the most common functional disabilities within twenty years. Within audiology, therefore, public health work is important.

This work requires knowledge of preventative measures within technology, acoustics and acoustic environments. As an audiologist, you can work within either the public or private sector. Audiologists carry out audiological testing independently and assess hearing impairment. An audiologist is often part of a work team with other professionals, such as doctors, educationalists, psychologists and engineers. Within habilitation and rehabilitation, an audiologist works on testing hearing equipment and various hearing aids, among other things.

Audiologists also train their patients to understand hearing tactics and communication strategies, which may mean that the patient learns to manage different situations so that they can hear as well as possible. This training can be provided on a one-to-one basis and in groups. A therapeutic and pedagogical approach is an important aspect of the work of an audiologist. The main subject of the programme, audiology, is the science of hearing and includes, among other things, diagnostics and rehabilitation. The subject is interdisciplinary, and also includes the fields of linguistics, medicine, psychology and engineering.

Theory and practice

The type of instruction varies according to the different ways of learning, which involves a mixture of lectures, seminars, placement and self-study. Student-activating teaching and learning forms a major component of the instruction. Some elements of the programme are Internet-based. The placement is spread over the semesters and takes place within Habilitation & Health and the Department of the Hearing and Deaf or with other care providers or resource centres, mainly in the Västra Götaland region.

During the first semester, students have the chance to visit several workplaces. The programme in audiology accounts for 180 higher education credits. Once the three years have been passed, an application can be made to be registered with the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. For those who opt to study for a supplementary year and choose to earn a Master of Science, the programme in audiology comprises 240 higher education credits.

Education Clinic

The education clinic at the programme in audiology supports professional development and research by providing undergraduate and graduate students with quality training experience in the two main areas of diagnostic audiology and audiological rehabilitation. The laboratory is also an important part of the programme in audiology's research activities. The facility has been established in close cooperation with hearing organisation, Region Västra Götaland.

Application, entrance requirements and selection

Every year, 30 students are admitted to the programme in audiology in Gothenburg. Admission takes place in the autumn semester. This programme is conducted in Swedish.

To meet the general entry requirements you must:

  • have successfully completed upper secondary (high school) education and meet the requirements for university studies in the home country.
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in English. The entry requirement is the equivalent of at least grade E of the Swedish upper secondary course English 6/English B. See English Language Requirements.
  • be able to demonstrate proficiency in Swedish.. The entry requirement is the equivalent of at least grade E of the Swedish upper secondary course Swedish 3/Swedish as a second language 3.

For students who received their final school grades after 31 December 2009, there is an additional entry requirement for mathematics as follows:

  • the student must have successfully completed courses in mathematics to reach the level of the Swedish courses Mathematics 1a, 1b or 1c / Mathematics A (approximately 10 years of mathematics studies).

If you have an International Baccalaureate (IB) degree from 2013 or earlier and received a diploma you have basic eligibility for higher education in Sweden, if you have sufficient knowledge in Swedish, English and mathematics.

For general admission, you must have:

  • Swedish A1 or A2, at least grade 4. If you completed your secondary education prior to January 1, 2010, it is enough with grades of at least 4 in Swedish B.
  • English B, SL, at least grade 4, with language of instruction other than English
  • Whoever has the IB diploma meet normal requirements in mathematics for basic eligibility, otherwise required Mathematics course A or Mathematics 1a/1b/1c.

And specific entry requirements are, with pass grades of at least E:

  • Mathematics B, Science B, Social Studies A or Mathematics 2a/2b/2c, Science 2, Social Studies 1b/1a1+1a2 (field-specific entry requirements 16/A14).

Selection: Grades (66%) and the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (34%).
