Degree programmes at the Sahlgrenska Academy

A degree programme is a complete educational programme leading to the awarding of a degree. Some programmes, such as those in medicine and pharmacy, are profession-oriented, while others are more general. Programmes vary in length and contain a stipulated number of courses. Each degree programme and the length of the various courses is standardised in terms of a points system. A term is normally twenty weeks long, and is worth 30 higher education credits (hec).

Admission to all degree programmes at University of Gothenburg is restricted. The number of students to be admitted to the various programmes is established annually by the university and the relevant faculties. Admission is competitive since, normally, there are more applicants than available places. Applicants are selected on the basis of grades obtained in upper secondary school and/or scores obtained in the Swedish University Aptitude Test.

All degree programmes are conducted in Swedish.

Applicants interested in applying for a full degree programme, and wish to acquire a Swedish Proficiency Certificate, can find more information on: Study in Sweden.

To study at the University of Gothenburg as a free mover you must apply through the joint Swedish student portal, universityadmissions.se.

Paper applications are not accepted. With very few exceptions, all applications for Swedish universities are made online.

For exchange students there are specific application rules.

Application and tuition fees

Some international students who apply for courses and programmes at universities and university colleges in Sweden have to pay application and tuition fees.

Exchange students and EU/EEA residents are exempt from paying fees, but as a free mover from abroad you need to check fees carefully before applying.

Leaving the EU will not automatically mean that UK students will have to pay tuition fees, both students from EEA countries and Switzerland are not liable to pay tuition fees in Sweden even though their countries are not members of the EU. It all depends on what kind of agreement is made with the UK. A student who is admitted as a non-fee-paying student also has the right to complete their programme without paying tuition fees, so any students admitted before Brexit will remain exempt from tuition fees for the duration of their programme.

Since we do not yet know what kind of agreement will be made between the UK and the Swedish government, we can’t give a more definite answer at the moment. More information about this, will be published at Universityadmissions - tuition fees

An application fee is payable when applying at universityadmissions.se. Tuition fees are paid directly to the university.
