Want to be a PhD student?

As a PhD student at Sahlgrenska Academy you will be educated in a dynamic environment with research of high quality and contributing new knowledge to your field as a self-dependent researcher.

The extent of the education

A Degree of Doctor is awarded after the PhD student (=third-cycle student) has completed a study programme of 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time studies) in one of the subjects that Sahlgrenska Academy offers PhD education within.

PhD students admitted to a doctoral programme that leads to a doctoral degree, have the right to conclude their studies with a licentiate degree (120 credits) (after a formal request by the student).

Read "Third-cycle qualifications" (The Higher Education Ordinance).

To be eligible for PhD studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

There are two alternatives to become a PhD student at Sahlgrenska Academy;

• via an advertised PhD position with the University of Gothenburg as employer where the position is applied for in competition with other applicants.
• part-time education combined with clinical work where you have an employer other than the University of Gothenburg.
