Opportunities for Doctoral student exchanges

As a registered PhD student you have several possibilities to conduct some of your education abroad. At the moment there is an opportunity to do this either within Europe through the Erasmusprogramme or outside of Europe through a bilateral agreement with one of our partner universities. It is important that the Sahlgrenska Academy has a valid agreement with the university you plan to go to. If it isn't listed, we can guide you through the process. Usually the supervisor has a broad international network which can be useful for you as a PhD student.

Erasmus as teacher or student

A PhD student can participate in an Erasmus exchange as a student or a teacher. The minimum amount of time for a student exchange should be at least 3 months and no more than 12 months. A scholarship of 15 000 kr is offered for studies from 3 months up to an academic semester. Additional scholarships are offered if you stay longer than a semester but will be a smaller amount.

For teacher exchanges there is no minimum amount of time for being away but you have to teach, supervise or be responsible for a seminar or similar for at least 5 teaching hours at the host university. Ordinarily the teacher is away for a week of work but it is possible to stay for a longer or shorter amount of time. The requirement is to teach for at least 5 hours to be eligible for funding. A travel grant of 400 euros maximum is awarded to teachers making an exchange. Additionally you will receive a maximum of 600 euro per week in funds covering expenses.
