Sahlgrenska Academy consists of six institutes, two units and a national center. Our 22 research centers are interdisciplinary venues for research, training, the private sector and the general community.



Research: Basic cellular research - what cells consist of, how they work, the ways that they are controlled by genetic material and their interaction with various types of microorganisms.
Education: Biomedical laboratory science, courses as part of the pharmacy, medical and dental programs.

Clinical Sciences

Research: Gynecological and pediatric health, otolaryngological conditions, cancer treatment, urinary tract, prostate and gastrointestinal system. As well as radiation physics, intensive care, biomaterials sciences, surgery and gynecology.
Education: Courses as part of the hospital physics and medical programs.

Health and Care Sciences

Research: Patient’s experience of health problems, diseases and suffering. In relation to the body and sociocultural structures.
Education programs: Nursing, midwifery, radiology nursing and specialist nursing.

Institute of Health and Care Sciences


Research: Studying key healthcare issues in close collaboration with clinical and preclinical researchers. Including the widespread conditions of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and rheumatism. Social medicine, public health, pulmonary medicine and allergology, as well as gastrointestinal research.
Education programs: Dietetics, public health science (bachelor and master), global health, business promotion and entrepreneurship, training for doctors with foreign degrees.

Neuroscience and Physiology

Research: Molecular and cellular biology research, experimental studies, clinical research and epidemiology. Including widespread psychiatric and neurological conditions, dementia disorders, neuropsychiatric disabilities and ophthalmic diseases.
Education programs: Pharmacy, audiology, occupational therapy, speech therapy and physical therapy.

Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology


Research: One of the leading academic settings worldwide for dentistry research. Care analysis, biomaterials research, inflammation research, hard tissue biology, odontological behavioral sciences, etc.
Education programs: Dental, dental technology, dental hygiene, training of dentists with foreign degrees.

Provides advanced technical equipment and expertise in the area of biomedicine.

Health Metrics

Coordinates education in statistics and health economics and participates in research projects that need statistical and health economic expertise.

The Swedish Information Centre for Rare Diseases

A national resource for information about uncommon diseases and syndromes. For patients, family members and caregivers.


Research Centers

Centre for Ageing and Health - AgeCap

Takes a holistic view of the aging person. Gather researchers in areas such as psychiatry, psychology, social work, sociology, rehabilitation and neurochemistry.


This WIN Excellence Center conducts research that will lead to implants of tomorrow. Research in Biomatcell stretches from the atomic level to the patient, with the goal of creating implants that can be customized for each individual.


Sahlgrenska Cancer Center

Gathers a broad, interdisciplinary research expertise in the field of cancer. Fundamental studies of the mechanisms and treatment of cancer using animal and computer models of cancer genetics, tumor biology and applied patient-oriented research.

CARe - Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research

CARe offers diverse expertise representing six faculties and a broad network of stakeholders within the health care sector and beyond to generate state-of-the-art science with the intention to support rapid revision of policies and their implementation.


Centre for Bone and Arthritis Research

Relies on a multidisciplinary translational approach with the overall aim to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis, two of the most common diseases in Sweden.

Centre for Ethics, Law and Mental Health

Conducts, supports and disseminates research about mental disorders, aggressive behaviour and moral and legal responsibility in an inter-disciplinary framework.


Center for Education and Research on Addiction - CERA

An interdisciplinary joint research center that works to strengthen and develop research and education in the area of addiction.

Center of Excellence for Research on Sex Steroids - CEROSS

A consortium in which the research is focused on sex hormones.


Centre for Culture and Health

Starts and supports various forms of research, training and evaluation on the theme of culture and health.


An epidemiological research center focused on the interaction between mental and physical health throughout the lifecycle. The research has a strong interdisciplinary character.


Gillberg Neuropsychiatry Centre

Brings together prominent clinical researcher in neuropsychiatry, neurodevelopment and eating disorders. Aims to double research activity in the field of autism, ADHD, and anorexia nervosa, and leave a lasting contribution to advancement of knowledge.

University of Gothenburg Centre for Person-centred Care - GPCC

A unique effort in clinical research. Researchers from around the University of Gothenburg are gathered, with the common goal of reducing suffering, increasing the satisfaction of patients and increasing the efficiency of care.


Göteborg Pediatric Growth Research Center

Examines, treats and research growth, endocrine disorders, puberty, diabetes, obesity and metabolism in children.

Centre for Health Economics

A virtual center for collaboration between researchers across disciplines and departmentens in the field of health economics.


Krefting Research Centre

Brings together a broad approach into understanding the epidemiology and pathophysiology of asthma, with the short- and long-term goal to improve management of asthma patients in general.

The Swedish Centre for Maritime Health

A network aimed at facilitating contacts between those concerned with seafarers' health.


CPMH – Center for Perinatal Medicine and Health

CPMH - Promoting health for pregnant women and children. This will be achieved by multidisciplinary research 'from molecular to societal level'.

Encourage clinical psychiatric research and teaching, providing a forum for scientific exchange and to encourage interdisciplinary research.


An EU-funded research project that aims to explore the common neurobiology behind food intake, dependence and stress.


The Sahlgrenska Center for Pediatric Ophthalmology Research

Focused on vascular and neural development research. The center is based on partnerships between clinical and experimental sciences as well as applied mathematics.

Centre for Skin Research Gothenburg

An interdisciplinary research center with a focus on exploring and understanding the molecular processes that are involved when skin is exposed to drugs, chemicals, nano particles and radiation.


Center for Spinal Cord Injuries

The center will focus on a group of patients with considerable healthcare and rehabilitation needs. The initiative covers research and education for patients, relatives and medical professionals aimed at giving those affected by such injuries more independence.

Stroke Centre West

Aims to create a dynamic venue for collaboration and knowledge sharing among stroke researchers in the region of Västra Götaland.


The Targeted Alpha Therapy Group

The main goal is to develop strategies for the treatment of disseminated cancer using alpha-particle emitters as the leading actor.

Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine

A new Life Science center being built in cooperation with Region Västra Götaland and AstraZeneca to provide a platform for state-of-the art translational research.
