  • New species of antibiotic-resistant bacteria found in infected wound

    [16 Jan 2020] A hitherto unknown antibiotic-resistant bacteria species, in the same family as E. coli and Salmonella spp., has been found and classified in Sweden. The proposed taxonomic name of the species, the first of the new genus, is Scandinavium goeteborgense, after the city of Gothenburg, where the bacterium was isolated and the research was done.

  • Many older people's glasses of wrong power

    [14 Jan 2020] Overall, Swedish 70-year-olds' eyesight is good, but many could see even better. Six in ten can improve their vision by getting eyeglasses or changing the power of the glasses they already have, according to a new study from the University of Gothenburg.

  • Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation's Diagnostics Accelerator Makes Major Investment to Fast Track Development of Novel Biomarkers

    [11 Dec 2019] Professor Henrik Zetterberg at the University of Gothenburg will head a major European research collaboration, which is developing a significantly easier way to diagnose Alzheimer's disease at an early stage through a blood test. Such a test could offer the potential for developing new treatments for Alzheimer's and related dementias.


  • New findings on satiety signaling from intestine

    [2 Dec 2019] A previously unknown mechanism that suppresses satiety signals from the small intestine is the main finding of a new study. This may explain, first, satiety disorders in obesity and diabetes and, second, the prompt health effects of gastric bypass, a form of bariatric surgery.

As a student here, you will also have the possibility to study parts of your education or Master’s degree project abroad.

Research that makes an impactHere, at the Sahlgrenska Academy you will find international research at the upmost forefront, such as a drinkable vaccine that saves hundreds of thousands lives in developing countries or a biomarker in the spinal fluid that can predict Alzheimer decease. Historically our research has led to great success, for example dental implants, beta blockers for heart failure and the world’s most sold pharmaceutical Losec. We are especially proud of our Nobel Prize Laureate Arvid Carlsson, who’s discovery of the dopamine’s important role in the brain was made right here in our campus at Medicinareberget.
