  • Completely new antibiotic resistance gene has spread unnoticed to several pathogens

    [27 Mar 2020] Aminoglycoside antibiotics are critically important for treating several types of infections with multi-resistant bacteria. A completely new resistance gene, which is likely to counteract the newest aminoglycoside-drug plazomycin, was recently discovered by scientists at the University of Gothenburg.

  • Highly topical training in infection control and hospital hygiene

    [26 Mar 2020] Infection control and hospital hygiene are key concepts in health care - especially now, during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. They are also the subjects of a new study program at the University of Gothenburg, designed for health professionals in the Nordic region. The application period for the fall semester is now underway.

  • Type 2 diabetes more common in men with early puberty

    [24 Mar 2020] Type 2 diabetes is more common in men whose puberty took place early, a University of Gothenburg study shows. An association may also be seen between low age of puberty and an elevated risk of the disease, if it develops, requiring insulin treatment.

  • New findings boost understanding of arterial aneurysm

    [16 Mar 2020] Abdominal arterial (or aortic) aneurysm in older men is associated with levels of certain subtypes of white blood cells, a study from the University of Gothenburg shows. The study results belong to an expanding research field that is expected improve both knowledge of the disease and treatment options.

The actuality of public health care is never far away at Sahlgrenska academy. Both researcher and students often collaborate in teams with other health care professions and experts. As a student here, you will also have the possibility to study parts of your education or Master’s degree project abroad.

Research that makes an impactHere, at the Sahlgrenska Academy you will find international research at the upmost forefront, such as a drinkable vaccine that saves hundreds of thousands lives in developing countries or a biomarker in the spinal fluid that can predict Alzheimer decease. Historically our research has led to great success, for example dental implants, beta blockers for heart failure and the world’s most sold pharmaceutical Losec. We are especially proud of our Nobel Prize Laureate Arvid Carlsson, who’s discovery of the dopamine’s important role in the brain was made right here in our campus at Medicinareberget.
