What and how much we should eat to be healthy depend on a number of different factors. Exercise habits, if we have a disease or where in life we are affect what is optimal diet. The dietician is an expert at finding the balance between food and activity based on the needs of each individual.
Three years of full-time studies in the dietetics programme lead to a professional academic qualification (Bachelor of Science in Dietetics) and a licence as a dietician. The students can then choose if they want to take a fourth year that leads to a Master of Science in Dietetics and the possibility of applying for doctoral studies in clinical nutrition.
Dieticians work with people of all ages, both preventively and after a patient has become ill. Many dieticians work in the healthcare services. It is common for the dietician to be a part of a work group with physicians, nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.
It is the dietician that compiles a dietary treatment for patients, who for various reasons must change their diet due to their disease. This could be a cancer patient who needs extra energy-rich diet, or a diabetes patient who needs help to change living habits.
Dieticians can also work with preventive healthcare in for example a municipality or a healthcare centre. The tasks of the dietician may then be to educate and provide information in diet and nutrition issues. This can take place in cooperation with schools, home-help services or nursing homes. Some dieticians get jobs in the pharmaceutical and food industry, some work with preventive healthcare in the sports movement while others are self-employed.
The programme's main field of study is clinical nutrition. This is the knowledge of food and nutrition and their function in the body. The subject is interdisciplinary and also comprises the subjects of biochemistry, physiology, food science and pathology.
One of the most important tools for a dietician is counselling methodology and the ability to provide and receive information. This is why the programme includes behavioural science with communication didactics, psychology and counselling methodology.
In the first year of the programme, the knowledge base is founded with basic knowledge in chemistry, physiology, nutrition and dietetics. In the second year, the healthy individual and prevention are in focus, and the third year focuses on the ill individual.
A part of the education in the dietetics programme consists of lectures. Equally important are laboratory sessions, field studies, seminars, group exercises and self-study. A central part of the programme is the on-site training when the students meet patients under the supervision of professionally active dieticians.
The on-site training is spread over the semesters with an emphasis on semester six, but as early as the first semester, the students get to visit a workplace. After three years education, the National Board of Health and Welfare issues a licence upon application. The dietetics programme comprises 180 higher education credits or 240 higher education credits for those who choose to pursue a master's degree.
Clinical nutrition, metabolism and energy conversion are examples of areas in which dieticians can conduct research. The fourth year of the programme prepares the students to conduct research, and those who choose to take this year can apply for doctoral studies after graduation.
Every year, 37 students are admitted to the dietetics programme in Gothenburg. Admission takes place in the autumn semester. This programme is conducted in Swedish.
