As a dental technician, you manufacture individually adapted prostheses, braces, crowns and other medical technology designs as ordered by a dentist. You can also work as a sales agent or product specialist in the dental industry. The craft demand an inclination for precision manual work, and also a good sense of colour and form. Three years of full-time studies lead to the Bachelor of Science in Dental Technology.
In order to work with material such as porcelain, cobalt chromium and acrylics, the dental technician must be knowledgeable in several advanced production technologies, manual and computerised. The profession also demands knowledge of how the body works and of oral diseases. Theoretical instruction and practical elements are therefore interspersed throughout the programme.
Through courses in anatomy, histology and dental anatomy, the student gains an early insight into biological factors that can influence dental technology work in the mouth. The students also learn about general odontological treatment principles, prophylaxis and hygiene.
Much of the instruction focuses on the durability of various dental materials, how various materials function together, how they can affect the patient and how the material's characteristics can change in the body. During the education, the students learn to produce various kinds of oral designs, both fixed and removable prostheses.
The students are prepared for their future working life through studies in stress and conflict management and work group dynamics. During the programme, practical information is also included about the administration of dental technology laboratories and what requirements the law sets on quality assurance.
The programme includes 30 weeks of work placement at a dental laboratory in Sweden or abroad. In the final semester, a degree project of 15 credits is done. The dental technology programme comprises 180 higher education credits.
A large part of the teaching in the dental technology programme is practically oriented, but just as important is pedagogy that activates students with practical demonstrations in small groups, lectures, seminars and literature assignments.
The courses are examined with written or oral exams, submission of seminar assignments or occasionally in the form of group seminars. The students must also demonstrate in practice that they have learned a certain element through practical examination.
Dental technology research concerns studying the characteristics of various materials, investigating how various materials work together and developing new technologies. The programme provides a broad base for research, but must be supplemented with one additional year of second-cycle studies to qualify for doctoral studies.
Every year, 20 students are admitted to the dental technology programme in Gothenburg. Admission takes place in the autumn semester. This programme is conducted in Swedish.

For 50% of the places, selection is made based on grades (66%) and the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (34%).
For the remaining 50% of the places, an alternative selection is made comprising manual testing, interviews and the writing of an essay. You apply to both at University Admissions in Sweden.

The test days take place during the month of June. If you have previously participated in the tests with passing results, this should be stated on the form. A passing result on the tests is valid for two years.
