Basic medicine

Basic medicine is a five-year doctoral programme combined with teaching at the Sahlgrenska Academy. The programme is aimed primarily at medical students interested in research and is intended to pave the way for future work in academia, healthcare or business.

The programme combines PhD training, introductory courses in pedagogy and supervised teaching in one of the following subjects:

  • Biochemistry / biology / genetics
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology
  • Morphology / developmental biology
  • Immunology / Microbiology


The programme is a full-time assignment during five years and is primarily intended for medical students wishing to proceed an academic career.

Eligibility

You are eligible for the programme if you fulfil the general and specific entry requirements for third-cycle studies. An additional specific entry requirement consists of a knowledge of the chosen subject area corresponding to the knowledge provided in the medical program. These are assessed by a prioritization committee in the selection.

The third-cycle education

The third-cycle education follows the rules adopted by the Sahlgrenska Academy and the general study plan for basic medicine. Doctoral studentship provides full social security during graduate studies.

Teacher education

The teacher education takes place during working hours and includes courses for 15 credits that provides basic teaching competence for the Sahlgrenska Academy's undergraduate programs. The remaining 45 credits are devoted to didactics and advancement in the chosen field of education through individual literature studies and teaching under supervision.
